Hon. Howard Weitzman, former Comptroller of Nassau County in Long Island, is an amyloidosis survivor. Amyloidosis is a rare disease that is difficult to diagnose; consequently many people are diagnosed too late or completely misdiagnosed and do not survive. Howard Weitzman was fortunate enough to have received an early diagnosis. He is very grateful for the wonderful treatment he received at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and at the Boston University Medical Center. To show his gratitude he chaired a fund-raising dinner in order to raise money for research to be donated to the hospitals that saved his life and, additionally, to increase awareness of amyloidosis, hoping that this will improve the chances of a correct diagnosis for others suffering from this terrible disease.
Howard's personal story is available on the TOS50 website at:

The fund raiser for amyloidosis took place on February 10, 2011, at Leonard's of Great Neck. It was a wonderful fun-filled evening that raised money for the purposes of research and awareness. In addition to hearing from the dedicated doctors who are involved with this disease, those who attended this event were fortunate enough to be treated to a performance by three extraordinary entertainers: Aaron Mor, a very gifted young man with a huge talent; Lisa Berman, who captured the stage immediately and gave a brilliant rendition of a medley of show tunes; and last, but not least, Richard Harris, an amyloidosis survivor, who happens to be an accomplished musician. During the cocktail hour we were treated to the music of Bang Zoom who kept our feet tapping and our fingers snapping.
The above video gives a sampling of what took place at the event.
